Odin’s Eye

Your Birth Chord

Before you had a name, you had a sky. Nine nights lead from this threshold down to the moment you arrived, and back: your sky measured, sung, and read as a mirror.

Enter the Cathedral
I ween that I hung on the windy tree, hung there for nights full nine … offered I was to Othin, myself to myself.
Hávamál 138, translated by Henry Adams Bellows (his stanza 139)

Night I The Well

When did the sky first see you?

Odin paid an eye for one drink from Mímir’s well. Yours costs only the moment you were born: a day, an hour, a place on the earth.

    Your seal

    Night VII The Mirror

Soul they had not, sense they had not, heat nor motion, nor goodly hue; soul gave Othin, sense gave Hönir, heat gave Lothur and goodly hue.
Völuspá 18, translated by Henry Adams Bellows

    What the mirror shows

Three lights are read first: the Sun, the Moon, and the sign that was rising in the east as you were born. The old way reads them as spirit, soul and body. Each mirror shows what the sky held, what it is read to mean, and a question to carry.
